An existing 1920's farmhouse clad with 14" wide redwood siding that is no longer available provided an interesting challenge for an addition. A new two-story glass link housing the breakfast room, a new stair, and a home office below, separates the old from the new. A new two-story volume containing the primary bedroom and bath and two new rooms below is clad in cedar shingles to be compatible with the existing redwood siding and left to weather to the same dark color. A bridge across the glass link connects the primary bedroom to the main house. The new kitchen's Brazilian slate countertops and stained rift cut oak cabinets strike a warm tone for this interesting mix of rustic and modern.
