This Berkeley Hills home came with an interesting mid-century architectural pedigree. Arne Kartwold, an architect who worked in William Wurster's office, designed the original house in 1941. Hans Gerson, another noteworthy Bay Area architect designed an addition in 1955. In 2003, our office renovated the existing kitchen and opened the north end of the kitchen to a new sitting/dining room addition. A lovely existing brick terrace and landscaped hillside to the rear of the house were preserved by locating the new addition beneath a precariously cantilevered existing primary bedroom. A large window wall with a butt glass corner preserves the cantilevered effect and provides the new sitting/dining room with a beautiful view to San Francisco and the bay.
